Garissa Floods - Nov 2006 through Jan 2007
In 2007 when floods covered Garissa in eastern Kenya - SOA used these funds to aid the mostly Muslim community. Food was distributed to more than 170 families (avg 6 per family) for a two week period! This relief brought not only food, but gave strength to continue the clean up and survive this unfortunate disaster. Pictured are scenes during and after the flood. Flood waters continued to cover the desert lands. Rising water levels wiped away homes, vehicles, animals, flooded schools and businesses and destroyed what few belongings people had. Thousands of people were forced to move to encampments 7 km from town. Their only way to town for work and flood relief was by foot or bicycle.
When interviewed by SOA staff, the local chief shared his gratitude. "There was plenty and enough. The people of Anole appreciated (the relief help) so much. That was the first time they got that food. Thank you so much to the people that provided."
